FRANKLIN -- The Franklin Police Department is joining a handful of other local communities in offering a "safe exchange zone" for transactions made on the Internet.
The department announced Wednesday that two parking spots on the south end of the department's parking lot have been designated specifically for the exchange of online purchases. The spots are clearly marked, and are under 24 hour video surveillance.

Despite the measures taken to make the exchange spot as safe as possible, the department advises that "exchanges take place during daylight hours, and users call 911 in the event of an emergency."
Such "safe exchange zones" have grown in popularity over the last few years, taking much of the risk out of purchases made on sites like Craigslist.
Both Waukesha and Greenfield instituted similar safe zones earlier this year.
