DODGE COUNTY - The Dodge County Sheriff announced a new initiative, just in time for one of the busiest travel days of the year.

Sheriff Dale Schmidt wants to put more of his resources into cutting traffic deaths in half, by this time next year.

The sheriff knew he had to do something after the number of traffic fatalities rose to 18 so far this year in his county.

TODAY'S TMJ4 rode along with the sheriff where he stopped two speeders.

"You’re going to see a lot more people out here, squads stopping people for excessive speed," Schmidt told a citizen he pulled over.

In a news conference Monday, Schmidt announced he will spend more money on overtime to keep deputies out on patrol.

He explained a roughly $40,000 DOT grant will help pay for that next year.
