MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Thousands packed the streets on Milwaukee's predominantly Hispanic south side to protest the sheriff's plans to crack down on illegal immigration.
With Mexican and American flags flying, the crowd Monday made its way into downtown Milwaukee and the county courthouse.
Latinos and others from at least 12 cities across Wisconsin traveled by bus to be part of the march. They are opposed to Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke's plan to enroll his deputies in a federal program that allows them to act as immigration agents.
Hispanic families say they are being profiled as a whole community.
Alma Varela-Zbichorski of Milwaukee says she doesn't want deputies to take on another role as agents for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The demonstration was organized by Voces de la Frontera, a Hispanic advocacy group.
Sheriff Clarke issued this statement on Facebook regarding the march:"Please accept my regrets. I will be working with agents from immigration and customs enforcement helping them identify criminal illegal aliens and therefore cannot attend your rally being held for me."
