The family of a young couple killed in a crash last month received a special gift from complete strangers Wednesday.
Members of the Latino Nation Club at Verona High School have been raising money for the U’Ren family.
Kirk U’Ren and Jennifer Steiner died in a crash on Highway 30 in February, leaving behind twin 1-year-old boys.
Despite having no relation to the family, the students wanted to help. Through a bake sale and other events, they raised over $200 for the family.
“It was really heartwarming. I still get emotional when I think about it – to see that our kids really understand what it is to be part of a community,” said Latino Nation Club adviser Frank Rodriguez.
The group also collected gifts and items like diapers and toys for the boys.
