A neighborhood is coming together to help raise money for an elderly man who was beaten while walking his dog near 91st and Burleigh Streets last week.

A week after Carmelino Pable, 70, was attacked with a bat, he's recovering Wednesday. He had staples removed from his head and his family says he still gets dizzy but all in all, he's doing well. Now, the community around him is stepping up to the plate to help find the suspect.

"Right away it was just shock and sadness," said Yvonne Duckhorn. "Can't believe this happened in our neighborhood and this was really heavy on my heart."

Duckhorn isn't all talk. She is one of many people who stepped up to the plate to help Pable and his family. Duckhorn created a GoFundMe to raise money for a reward to be given to anyone who has a tip leading to an arrest in the case.

She wasn't the only one interested in helping either. More than 100 people donated to the cause, raising $3,100 as of Wednesday evening. Duckhorn says $2,500 will go to a reward while the rest will go directly to Pable for his medical expenses.

"It reaffirms there is good even when there's bad." Duckhorn said. "Our neighborhood is great and the people in it are close. We look out for each other but if this were to happen to someone in my family, I know that our neighborhood would come through and help us out."

Pable is recovering at home, smiling with his dog but his family is grateful for the generosity of their fellow neighbors.

"It's really hard for me," said Erma Miller, Pable's daughter. "All these problems in my life. We're poor people. Thank you so much for all the neighbors and God bless you all."

Police are following leads but say they have no suspects right now. Anyone with information is asked to call 414-935-7271.
