MILWAUKEE -- Authorities are investigating how a body ended up in the Mitchell Park Pond after a man walking his dog found the body Sunday afternoon.

Milwaukee Police and the Milwaukee Fire Department dive team responded to the pond near 23rd and Pierce at about 2:30 p.m. The pond is located just east of the Mitchell Park Domes.

Arturo Pineda says he was walking his dog when he saw something in the water. Pineda says he doesn't speak English well but managed to explain that his dog ran over to the remains and that's when Pineda called 911.

He said the body was "all bones" and a "skeleton."

Lt. Daniel Thompson with the Milwaukee Police Metropolitan Division Homicide Unit says he could not describe the condition of the remains and it's unknown how long the body was there.

He says the investigation is in the very early stages and he expects to learn more in the next 24 hours.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner responded to the scene and is expected to perform an autopsy.
