Bed bugs force Friday closure of Racine Public Library

The Racine Public Library will close Friday to address a bed bug issue. Within the last month, bed bugs have been found.

“This is the first instance of seeing a live bug and we were not happy. We found one in the circulation area that was kind of freaky,” said Library Director Jessica Macphail.

Macphail says another was on a DVD. The library doesn't want bed bugs going home with anyone. The bookmobile will also be closed Friday.  Bed bug sniffing dogs will roam the building. If they find more bed bugs, pest control will have to come in to do a treatment.

“We’re very concerned for the patrons, I would be concerned if I thought the library had bed bugs so we want to do everything we can to make sure that there are no bed bugs when we open on Saturday,” said Macphail.

Robert Simpson isn’t upset or angry, but he is surprised.

“It’s a good thing that they’re taking care of it, I wouldn't want to take any home with me,” said Simpson.

He comes in three to four  times a week for movies. He doesn't mind missing one day as long as they’re open on Saturday.

“You don’t usually think of bed bugs being in a place like the public library,” he said.
