The murder trial of an Oconomowoc woman accused of killing her husband is now in the hands of the jury after both the prosecution and the defense offered closing arguments Monday in a Waukesha County courtroom.

Amy Van Wagner is accused of shooting her husband to death and then hiding his body in the basement of their home in May of 2015. She faces life in prison if convicted of the charges.

Waukesha County District Attorney Susan Opper said during her closing, “the defendant had the opportunity to kill Stan Van Wager, this wasn’t some stranger that broke in and killed Stan for no reason.”

The state said Stan was killed early Friday morning while working on his computer but forensic experts admitted that the time of death could not be exactly determined. The defense urges jurors to consider testimony by their expert, while the state said those experts weren’t looking at all of the evidence.

While both sides have admitted that the Van Wagners had a troubled relationship at times and argued over money, defense attorney John Schiro offered this to the jury, “this isn’t the kind of couple where one of them executes the other one over some money.”

Testimony has been ongoing for two weeks. The judge plans to allow the jury to deliberate into the evening hours.
