An auction of a famous painting Wednesday morning raised $420,000 for student scholarships at Washington High School.

It was a gift from the class of 1927 and everyone's excited because it's helping students.

Colleen Moran, director of the college career center at Washington is happy the painting auctioned off for big bucks.

"That's encouraging to everybody here," she said.

It's like magic, all the money from the painting "Creek at Twilight" by Birger Sandzen is funding with the school’s alumni association scholarship.

It's emotional for student Veronica Rimmer, a senior, to talk about.

"I know the burden won't be as hard, now more than ever I've been motivated to get scholarships," she said

She's an applicant who's attending Marquette University in fall but knows if she's awarded another scholarship her hard work is paying off.

"I've never seen an alumni group anywhere like this before, I think it's one of the very special things about Washington High School," Moran said.

This isn't the first Sandzen painting to be sold to help students. Back in February "Mountain Symphony" sold for $352,000.

After years of hanging on the school's walls they were found in boiler room in 2004.

"These funds are going to help them make their dreams come true," said guidance counselor Karolyn Taylor.

Students will be interviewing with the alumni association next week. The auctions have raise more than $700,000.
