A woman and her dog are on the mend after getting shot by police around 5:15 a.m. Friday morning. Police were in an alley on the south side investigating a report of shots fired.

Police say a pit bull charged at an officer and was shot. The dog's owner was hit in the leg as the bullet ricocheted.

Eric Mata's mom lives downstairs from the dog's owner.

“There’s a sign that says Beware of Dog,” explains Mata. “My concern is that there should be accountability in that sense. People want to make this about the dog. It’s not about the dog. It’s about police coming into the yard without asking permission.”

The woman and her dog are recovering at home
